At least six students and a two staff members were killed in the massacre at the Raul Brasil elementary school on the eastern outskirts of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Seventeen others were injured.
Two hooded gunmen, who appeared to be teens, opened fire just as classes began on Wednesday morning and then killed themselves, bringing an end to the shooting spree, local media reported.
Sao Paulo state governor Joao Doria said that the victims had been “cruelly murdered” in a Twitter post.
Eyewitnesses say at least one of killers wielded knives and stabbed a number of people while inside the school.
Student Rosni Marcelo, 15, said he was nearly stabbed, but managed to escape from the school alive.
“I went to the principal’s office, and there were a lot of dead people on the ground. They were yelling, but I couldn’t understand them,” he said.
Images published on social media show one of the shooters wearing a hood with the design of a skull and wore a black t-shirt, pants and glove.
It is said they were also armed with a bow and arrow, knives containers that appeared to be Molotov cocktails and a wired suitcase that was being inspected by a bomb squad.
The motive for the killings remains unclear but police confirmed that the attackers were former students.
The adult who was killed is said to be the principal of the Raul Brasil public grade school in the municipality of Suzano.
Distraught parents rushed to the school to find out if their children were caught up in the massacre.
Many of the students on the campus believed the gunshots were “fireworks”.
A witness named Juliano, who lives nearby, told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper that the attack happened shortly after classes began.
He said: “I live next door. I saw a commotion and I went there.
“I arrived and there was a commotion, a lot of children running out bloodied.
“Everyone was running.”
Reports said the gunmen appeared to be teenagers.
As police and paramedics raced to the scene, two helicopters were dispatched to assist the emergency response.
Shortly before the shooting began, there was a gun call near the school, G1 reported.
Police were responding to the initial call when they heard children screaming at the school nearby.
Officers were investigating whether the two gun incidents were linked.
Tributes have been flooding in for the victims across the country.
Actress Leandra Leal wrote on Twitter: “My sincere condolences to the the families, friends and classmates of the victims of the massacre at the Raul Brasil State School.”

School shootings are rare in Brazil, even though the country is one of the world’s most violent, with more annual homicides
than any other.
The last major school shooting was in 2011, when 12 children were shot dead by a former pupil in Rio de Janeiro.
While gun laws are extremely strict in Brazil, it is not difficult to illegally purchase a weapon.
