Rio de Janeiro is suffering floods and landslides caused by rain since last Thursday. The Fire Department and the Emergency Management Agency (SEDEC/RJ in Portuguese) are working day and night aided by several volunteers, searching for corpses and alive victims buried in the ruins. They estimate in about 140 death people until now, one of the greatest tragedies ever experienced by this state, surpassing São Paulo by far when 74 people got killed due to landslides and overflow, and becoming the worst disaster in the world occasioned by rain in the past year.
The city of Niteroi is the one which had more landslides and also the highest number of victims. The state’s capital, also named Rio de Janeiro, had had major floods, such as the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas which disappeared in the middle of a meter of water above its normal level.
Many people found hilarious forms of protesting against the government, blaming it the tragedy. Like the athlete Reno, who decided to practice wakeboard on Epitácio Pessoa Avenue, same site chosen by a man to ride his swan. Both of them in the lake bed of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.
Who also had had problems were the volleyball players of the teams Rio-Unilever and São Caetano-Blausiegel. The semi-final game was postponed because the water level reached the height of the first accents of the grandstand.
Orion de Sá is one of the many volunteers that are helping. He says he had been sleeping only three hours by night because of helping out the victims. Nicole Nandes runs a hip-hop party every Wednesday and tonight tickets are sold for donations (food, medicines, clothes etc). Both of them also mobilize their friends in the campaign for help (labour and donation).
CPTEC/INPE (Brazilian National Weather Service) informs that the rain will last two more days, worrying those who’s living in the city.
